Pakistan (Islamabad): During the ongoing elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the issue of removal of Article 370 from Kashmir has become very heated. This decision of PM Modi to remove Article 370 and 35A from Kashmir in the year 2019 is pricking the 57 countries of the Organization of Islamic Association (OIC) like an arrow. In this context, Pakistan said on Thursday that the OIC Contact Group on Kashmir has reaffirmed its support towards the Kashmiri people and has asked India to resolve the issue as per the UN resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

Let us tell you that India had earlier also targeted this 57-member group of Muslim majority countries and said that bodies like OIC should not be allowed to take advantage of their platform to comment on the internal affairs of the country for vested interests. India has emphasized that the OIC has no right to comment on matters related to Jammu and Kashmir as Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inseparable part of India.

After unity of Islamic countries, Pakistan issued statement on Kashmir

Pakistan’s Foreign Office said in a statement on Thursday that the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir met on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday. According to the statement, the meeting, chaired by OIC Secretary General Hissen Brahim Taha, was attended by representatives of the Contact Group member countries, which include Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Niger and Azerbaijan. A delegation of Kashmiri people also participated in it. The meeting passed a joint statement reaffirming the OIC’s continued support for the “legitimate struggle” of the Kashmiri people to achieve their right to self-determination in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

What did the Islamic countries say in the joint statement

The joint statement stressed that lasting peace and stability in South Asia depends on the final resolution of the Kashmir issue. It also condemned the alleged campaign to ban several Kashmiri political parties and confiscate property of Kashmiri activists. It has been claimed that electoral activities in Jammu and Kashmir cannot replace the right to self-determination. OIC is an inter-governmental organization headquartered in Jeddah city of Saudi Arabia. This organization has generally been supportive of Pakistan and has often taken the side of Islamabad on the Kashmir issue. (Language)
