Lahore court reprimanded Punjab government

A court in Pakistan has severely reprimanded the Punjab government. This matter is related to freedom fighter Shaheed Bhagat Singh. The court order regarding naming a square in Lahore after freedom fighter Shaheed-e-Azam Shaheed Bhagat Singh was not complied with.

The matter is of Shadman Chowk in Lahore

Being angry on this, the court has issued a notice to the Punjab government and given it a last chance to respond. The court was hearing a petition requesting contempt proceedings against the Punjab government for not implementing the court’s order to name Shadman Chowk in Lahore after Bhagat Singh.

More time sought to respond

Lahore High Court judge Shams Mahmood Mirza, while hearing a petition filed by Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation Pakistan, has given the Punjab government a last chance to respond on the matter. Punjab government lawyer Saad Bin Ghazi appeared in court and sought more time to respond.

The next hearing of the case is on November 8

The judge said in his order, ‘On the request of the Punjab lawyer, the Punjab government is given the last chance to respond on this matter. Petitioner’s lawyer Khalid Zaman Khan Kakar told the court that there has already been a lot of delay in this case. A decision should be taken on this immediately. The court has fixed November 8 as the date for the next hearing of the case.

The order to name was given in 2018

Foundation chairman Imtiaz Rashid Qureshi had filed a contempt petition over the government’s failure to name Shadman Chowk after Shaheed Bhagat Singh. Qureshi said the Lahore High Court had in 2018 ordered the government to name Shadman Chowk after Bhagat Singh, where he was hanged in 1931.

Deliberately disobeyed court order

He said, ‘But both the provincial and district governments deliberately did not obey the order of Lahore High Court, thus committing contempt.’ Bhagat Singh fought for the independence of India and at that time the country was undivided. The freedom fighter is respected not only by Sikhs and Hindus but also by Muslims in the Indian subcontinent.
