North Korea Military Exercises: Tensions are increasing between South Korea and North Korea. Recently, South Korea started military exercises with America, to which North Korea has lodged strong objections. North Korea’s military said on Monday (October 7) that the South Korea-US military exercise was an “open provocation and dangerous war exercise”.
According to media reports, last week North Korea tested a number of missiles, including a potentially failed intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) and hundreds of artillery shells at sea. This missile test of North Korea was a direct answer to America and South Korea. Both the countries conducted war exercises for six days.
‘Deliberately heightened tension’
North Korea’s military criticized the practice of the US and South Korea. It was said by the army that it was a Vigilant Storm exercise and it deliberately increased the tension and provoked an aggressive decision. The army described it as a dangerous warfare exercise of very high offensive nature.
What did the North Korean military say?
North Korea’s military said it had conducted activities simulating various attacks on its airports and aircraft as well as a major South Korean city in order to “destroy the persistent war hysteria of the enemy”. On November 2, North Korea also confirmed the firing of two apparently nuclear-capable “strategic” cruise missiles toward the waters of the southeastern coastal city of Ulsan, home to a nuclear power plant and large factory parks.
‘KPA will fight them’
The General Staff of the North Korean People’s Army (KPA) accused Seoul and Washington of a “more volatile confrontation” and vowed to counter their exercises with “continuous, resolute and heavily pragmatic military measures”. “The more persistent the enemy’s provocative military moves, the more and more mercilessly the KPA will fight them,” the official KCNA news agency reported.
Senior diplomats from South Korea, the United States and Japan in their phone talks on Monday strongly condemned North Korea’s latest missile launches. Describing the missile test as a “grave threat” to the security of the Korean Peninsula and beyond.
