Kiev: After the occupation of Russian land by the Ukrainian army, there is more panic in Kiev than in the Kremlin camp. Ukraine knows that Russian President Putin will definitely retaliate fiercely against Kiev. In such a situation, military officials of the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk on Friday urged the citizens to speed up the process of evacuating the area, as the Russian army is rapidly reaching the place, which has been Moscow’s main target in the war for months. Even before this, many areas of Ukraine have been evacuated amid the fear of a retaliation.
The call for people to evacuate as soon as possible comes at a time when the Ukrainian army is trying to divert the attention of the Russian army towards its territory by crossing the border and making a bold incursion into the Kursk region. The haste to evacuate the region also shows that Ukraine has taken a huge risk to escalate the war by attacking Russia. Ukraine launched the attack in the Kursk region on August 6. The attack was a bold attempt to change the dynamics of the two-and-a-half-year-old conflict, but it will depend on Ukraine’s weak defences withstanding the pressure of the Russian attack.
Ukraine is worried about the possibility of a counterattack by Russian troops
The Russian military has gained momentum and superior strength on the battlefield in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine since the spring. In recent weeks, the evacuation of the Donetsk region around Pokrovsk has become necessary. Pokrovsk authorities said in a Telegram post on Friday that Russian troops were “moving at a rapid pace. With each passing day, the time to collect personal belongings and leave for safer areas is getting shorter”. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned on Thursday that Pokrovsk and other nearby cities in the Donetsk region were “experiencing the most intense Russian attacks”. (AP)
