Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif was ‘murdered’ in Kenya, there was no identity mistake, Pakistan gave information

Islamabad : Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said on Tuesday that preliminary investigations showed journalist Arshad Sharif was “murdered” in Kenya and was not a case of mistaken identity, as claimed by local police. Sharif (49) was a former ARY TV reporter and TV anchor and was known for his close association with former Prime Minister Imran Khan. He fled to Kenya after Pakistan’s security agencies booked him on charges of sedition and ‘sedition’ earlier this year.

On 23 October, he was shot near a police post near Nairobi, causing an uproar in the country. Kenyan police later said it was a case of ‘misidentification’. Sanaullah said that a two-member team sent by Pakistan to Nairobi has returned and informed them about the preliminary investigation. The team constituted to probe the case included Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) director Athar Wahid and IB’s Umar Shahid Hamid.

Shock to Imran Khan, Shahbaz Sharif, ISI officer not named in FIR of murderous attack
Arshad killed in target killing
Sanaullah dismissed the Kenyan police’s claim about the incident, saying, “Prima facie Arshad Sharif was murdered.” It was a targeted killing and not a case of mistaken identity. “If it is a murder, as prima facie it appears, then two brothers, Waqar Ahmed and Khurram Ahmed, living in Kenya would have known about it,” he said. Sharif was staying with two brothers of Pakistani origin, Waqar and Khurram, living in Kenya.

Demand for formation of judicial commission for fair investigation
The minister also said that the investigation is still incomplete and the team will also visit Dubai for further investigation. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Tuesday wrote a letter to Chief Justice Omar Ata Bandiyal, demanding the formation of a judicial commission to conduct a fair and credible inquiry into the murder of Arshad Sharif, he said. He has appealed to the top judge to constitute a commission comprising all the available judges of the court.

Arshad Sharif went from Dubai to Kenya
The Prime Minister said that setting up of a commission is important for the rule of law and restoration of public confidence in government institutions. Shehbaz Sharif also assured the judge that his government would extend full support to the commission. Journalist Arshad Sharif had moved from Pakistan to Dubai and then to Kenya in August.
