Turkish Foreign Ministry issued statement
Turkey’s foreign ministry said in a statement that Turkey did not recognize Russia’s annexation of Crimea in an illegitimate referendum in 2014. We have emphasized our strong support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty at every opportunity. In accordance with this stance adopted in 2014, we reject Russia’s decision to include Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye. This decision, which is a serious violation of the established principles of international law, cannot be accepted. We reiterate our support for a solution to this war, the seriousness of which is increasing. Turkey said that peace between the two countries can be achieved only on the basis of dialogue.
Putin yesterday included four regions of Ukraine in Russia
On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an official document on the annexation of four Ukrainian territories into Russia. Pro-Russian representatives from these four regions were also present on the occasion. On this occasion, Putin fiercely targeted Ukraine and Western countries in his speech. Putin said that the people of these areas have given their decision in the referendum. Now the people of these four regions are Russian citizens and it is our responsibility to protect them. Putin warned that if there was an attack in our region, Russia would retaliate with full force.
Russia and Turkey are friends even though they are enemies
The friendship between the leaders of Russia and Turkey is well known. Turkey is an active member of NATO. NATO was formed against Russia at the beginning of the Cold War. Despite this, Turkey has purchased the S-400 missile system from Russia. Not only this, Turkey and Russia jointly run military operations in Syria. Apart from military ties with Russia, Turkey has also greatly increased mutual trade. In such a situation, Turkey’s opposition to Russia’s decision is considered a big decision.
