Russia Ukraine War: Biden boosts US troops stationed on Poland border, meets Ukrainian refugees

Warsaw: US President Joe Biden on Friday met and encouraged American soldiers stationed near Poland’s border with Ukraine. Biden also met with refugee Ukrainian citizens here. Biden assured all possible help to the refugees. About 22 lakh people have fled to Poland from Ukraine. The US President held a meeting with his Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda in the border town of Jasjów. During the talks, along with aid for Ukrainian refugees, bilateral issues were also discussed. Biden assured Duda of all help during this period of war.

Earlier, Biden met with members of the 82nd Airborne Division of the US Army. He arrived at the airport in Rzejo, the largest city in southeastern Poland, on Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, the European Union said about 3.5 million Ukrainians had fled the country.

US $1 billion in aid for Ukrainian refugees

Earlier in Brussels after meetings with other world leaders, Biden said Poland, Romania and Germany should not be left alone to deal with Europe’s biggest refugee crisis since World War II. It is an international responsibility, he said after announcing an additional $1 billion in aid to help Ukrainian refugees.

300 people were killed in Mariupol on 16 March
Meanwhile, at least 300 people have been killed in a bomb blast at a drama theater in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol on March 16. Russian troops have surrounded the city of Mariupol, from where several reports of explosions have come to the fore. According to the report of The Guardian, this information was given by the local authorities. About 1,300 people are said to have taken shelter in the building and only 150 survivors were able to come out of the rubble soon after the attack. Sources said that most of the people present in the theater were hiding from the shelling under the statue and the debris was obstructing their exit. As The Guardian reports, there are no emergency services operating in Mariupol and fierce fighting and shelling near the theater halted rescue efforts.
