Shahbaz Sharif’s son wins Punjab Chief Minister’s election, Imran Khan’s ‘beautiful’ dream was defeated

Islamabad: Hamza Shahbaz has won the election for the post of Chief Minister in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Hamza Shahbaz is the son of Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. He defeated Parvez Elahi, the candidate of Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. However, this victory is quite controversial, so the matter is set to go to the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Just before voting, Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Dost Mohammad Mazari ruled that the votes of PML-Q members would not be counted in this election, keeping in mind the letter of party chief Chaudhary Shujaat.

Hamza got three votes more than Elahi
According to Mazari, Hamza Shahbaz got 179 votes while Parvez Elahi got 176 votes. While voting was going on inside the House, there were reports that PML-Q president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain had written a letter abstaining from Elahi’s candidature. On the basis of this letter, the Deputy Speaker did not even count the votes of the MLAs of his party. A day earlier, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain had met Asif Ali Zardari, the President of the Pakistan People’s Party. Earlier, Zardari had asked Shujaat to write a letter, seeking a direction to the PML-Q lawmakers not to vote for Elahi.

Shujaat Hussain opposed the candidate of his own party
Geo News journalist Hamid Mir quoted PML-Q’s Moonis Elahi as saying that Shujaat had refused to support Parvez as a PTI candidate. Soon after, Moonis tweeted that a joint parliamentary meeting of the PML-Q and PTI had unanimously made Parvez its candidate for the chief minister’s election.

Imran’s party won the assembly by-election
Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf won the Punjab Assembly by-elections held a few days ago. This by-election was held after the MLAs of Imran’s party switched sides. The Pakistani Supreme Court had disqualified these MLAs and ordered re-election. After this victory, Imran had claimed that the people of Punjab were against Shahbaz Sharif’s party.
