Sri Lankan army attacks Indian fishermen in North Jaffna, 19 people seized along with boat – India TV Hindi

Colombo: The Sri Lankan Navy has taken major action against Indian fishermen in the northern Jaffna province. The Navy has arrested 19 Indian fishermen for illegal fishing in its waters near Deft Island. Also their two boats have been confiscated. Sri Lankan Navy gave this information on Thursday. This is the second such incident within a month. Just a few days ago, the Sri Lankan Navy had arrested some Indian fishermen for illegally entering their territory.

The Sri Lankan Navy said in a statement that it arrested 19 Indian fishermen who were illegally fishing in Sri Lankan waters on Wednesday in an operation along with the Coast Guard and seized two of their boats. According to the statement, the captured fishermen and their two boats were taken to Kankesanthurai port. It said that so far this year, the Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 88 Indian fishermen and also seized 12 Indian boats. The Navy has handed over the fishermen to authorities for further legal action.

Last year this many fishermen were caught

In the year 2023, the Sri Lankan Navy had arrested 240 Indian fishermen on charges of illegal fishing in its waters. Apart from this, 35 boats were confiscated. This year, 88 Indian fishermen have been arrested in just one month. The Sri Lankan Army is also worried about this. The number of fishermen is continuously increasing. (Language)
