Most Canadians have never known a world where Queen Elizabeth II was not its official head of state.
News of the death of Britain’s longest-serving monarch sent shock waves of grief across the country on Thursday.
The leader of the Monarchist League of Canada says Canadians will process their loss at their own pace as commemorations take place across the Commonwealth in the coming days.
Robert Finch says the 96-year-old has been “a constant in a changing world” and that her death marks “the end of an era”.
Finch says the former queen has been far more than a figurehead in Canada and has paid close attention to the country during her record-breaking reign.
He expects Canadians to remember the late monarch as “one of us”.
