Purulia Arms Drop Case: Niels Holck, the mastermind of the Purulia arms case, will never come to India again. A Danish court has rejected the Indian government’s appeal for Holck’s extradition. The court’s order is against Denmark’s top prosecution authority, which had given the green signal to send Niels abroad. Holck has confessed to dropping a large quantity of arms from a plane in Purulia, West Bengal in 1995.
‘There could be a danger to life’
The Danish court said that despite additional diplomatic guarantees provided by India, there is a risk that Holck will face torture or other inhumane treatment in India. Holck, 62, said he fears his life could be in danger if he is extradited. Before the verdict was announced, Holck told Danish radio DR on Thursday morning, “I would like to be held accountable before the judge because I believe this is a justifiable emergency.”
Holk had fled
A British national and five Latvians were arrested by Indian authorities after the arms drop in Purulia, but Holck escaped. India had first asked Denmark for Holck’s extradition in 2002. The government had agreed, but two Danish courts had rejected his extradition, saying he would be at risk of torture or other inhumane treatment in India. In June 2023, Denmark again looked into India’s extradition request and said the requirements of the Extradition Act had been met. Now the court has given a big relief to Niels Holck.
