According to a Fox News report, after flying for more than 13 hours, the plane landed back at the same airport from where it took off due to an unusual incident. Flight EK448 took off at around 10:30 am on Friday morning local time. According to FlightAware, the pilot made a U-turn about halfway through the 9,000-mile journey. The plane finally landed back in Dubai on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.

The pilot took the U-turn because a severe flood situation has arisen in New Zealand’s Auckland city and due to this the airport was closed over the weekend. Auckland airport officials said on Twitter it was “extremely disappointing” but important steps had to be taken to protect passengers. He said, ‘Auckland Airport is assessing the damage to our international terminal and unfortunately it has been determined that no international flights can operate today. We know it is very disappointing but the safety of the passengers is our top priority.

According to the BBC, Auckland saw the “worst rainfall on record” on Friday. A state of emergency continues in New Zealand’s largest city. Because there is a possibility of more heavy rain this week. At least four people died in the severe flood. Videos on social media showed residents trapped in waist-deep water and rescue operations being carried out on kayaks.
