77 Indian military personnel are present in Maldives
Less than 24 hours after taking oath as the country’s President, Mohammed Muizzu had made a formal request to the Indian government to ‘withdraw’ Indian troops from Maldives. Addressing a press conference here, Mohammed Firozul Abdul Khalil, Under Secretary for Public Policy in the Office of the President, said that as per the new administration, there are 77 Indian military personnel in Maldives. Muizzu had made the presence of Indian soldiers in Maldives an issue during the election campaign.
Indian soldiers are working in aircraft and helicopter management
Maldivian media quoted Firozul as saying that there are 24 Indian military personnel to manage the first helicopter, 25 Indians to manage the Dornier aircraft, 26 Indians to manage the second helicopter. There are two more members for maintenance and engineering. President Muizzu, who won the presidential election in September, has started efforts to deport all 77 Indians from Maldives.
The new President has got the support of China
Maldives is strategically one of India’s major maritime neighbors in the Indian Ocean region. Defense and security relations between India and Maldives were strengthened during the previous government of Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Maldives is also one of the biggest beneficiaries of India’s Neighborhood First policy. During a meeting with Union Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday, Muizzu officially requested the Indian government to withdraw its military personnel from Maldives. Muizzu is widely regarded as a pro-China leader.
