Dhaka: The newly appointed advisor to Bangladesh’s Home Ministry has pledged to take strict legal action against those who attack minorities, saying that there is no place for violence or hatred in the country. According to the report of ‘Dhaka Tribune’ newspaper, Brigadier General (Retired) M Sakhawat Hussain gave this assurance while meeting the delegation of International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) Bangladesh at the Secretariat. Violence against members of the Hindu community has increased in Bangladesh after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government. Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister and went to India on August 5 after widespread protests against her government over the controversial reservation system in jobs.

M Sakhawat Hussain said that Bangladesh is a country of communal harmony, where people of all religions have progressed together without any conflict. He said that those who attack or harass minorities will not be spared and strict legal action will be taken against them. He said that there is no place for violence, conflict or hatred in a country that believes in peace.

‘Attack on Hinduism’

During the meeting, ISKCON Bangladesh president Satyaranjan Baroi urged Hussain to take steps on priority basis for the protection of minorities and submitted eight proposals to ensure their safety, including enacting laws, setting up monitoring cells, forming a minority commission and providing continuous security to temples. Hussain assured all support in these matters. The Bangladesh National Hindu Grand Alliance has said that the minority community has faced attacks and threats at 278 places in 48 districts since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5. The organisation has termed it an “attack on Hinduism”. (Language)
