Russian Glide Bomb
Kyiv: A Russian glide bomb hit a five-story building in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, injuring at least 12 people, including a three-year-old girl. Local officials gave this information on Thursday. Kharkiv regional governor Oleh Sinihubov said the bomb fell on the fourth floor of the building on Wednesday night, causing a fire. Firefighters began searching for survivors amid the smoke and debris. The city of Kharkiv, located about 30 kilometers from the Russian border, has been the target of frequent air strikes during the war against Russia. This war has now entered its third year.

Glide bombs have become a common weapon in warfare. Glide bombs have terrorized civilians and devastated Ukrainian military front-line defenses. The weapons were central to Russia’s capture of the strategic town of Vuhladar on Wednesday, as Russian forces swept through the eastern Donetsk region and forced exhausted Ukrainian troops to withdraw from destroyed towns and villages. Ukraine has no effective countermeasures to glide bombs, which are fired by Russian aircraft from inside Russia.

Attacks continue from both sides
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the latest attack in Kharkiv highlighted the urgent need for increased support from Ukraine’s Western allies. Zelensky has recently held talks with US officials in an effort to secure further Western military support. Ukraine is facing a shortage of troops on the front lines and is struggling to fend off continued Russian attacks. Both sides continue to conduct regular cross-border air strikes, usually at night. Ukraine’s Air Force said on Thursday that 78 of the 105 Shahad drones fired by Russia overnight were destroyed. 15 areas of the country came under attack. Meanwhile, the Russian military shot down 113 Ukrainian drones in the air overnight, according to a statement from the Moscow-based Defense Ministry. (AP)
