New York: According to the latest dates released by the United Nations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address the Future UN Summit on September 23, but he will not address the high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly. This information has come to light after the revised list published by the United Nations earlier this month. Earlier in July, the provisional list of speakers for the general debate of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) released by the United Nations included PM Modi’s name among those who would have addressed the high-level debate on September 26. However, according to the revised provisional list of speakers released now, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is now expected to address the general debate on September 28.

PM Modi will attend the Quad summit

It is also worth mentioning here that, after attending the Quad summit with US President Joe Biden, Australian and Japanese counterparts in Delaware on September 21, PM Modi will address a big community event ‘Modi and the US, Progress Together’ at the 16,000-seat Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Long Island on September 22. According to the organisers, more than 25,000 people have applied for tickets for the diaspora event.

What is the future summit?

According to the UN, the Future Summit aims to bring together world leaders to “accelerate efforts to meet existing international commitments, address emerging challenges, and seize opportunities.” The leaders are expected to adopt the Future Compact, a visionary document that will also include a global digital pact.

Who will be the first speaker?

The general debate of the UN General Assembly session will be held from 24 to 30 September this year. Traditionally, the first speaker in the debate will be Brazil, who will open the high-level session on September 24. The second speaker will be the United States, whose current President Joe Biden will deliver the last address of his term to the leaders of member countries from the UN platform. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will present his report before the start of the general debate, which will be followed by the address of the President of the 79th session of the General Assembly.
