Shiveluch volcano has erupted after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake on the eastern coast of Russia and there is also a threat of tsunami. Ash from the volcano can be seen up to 8 kilometers above the sea level. CNN quoted TASS as saying that lava has erupted rapidly from the volcano. However, so far no person has been harmed due to the earthquake or the lava coming out of the volcano. There is no news of anyone being injured.
Shiveluch volcano is located about 280 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a coastal city with a population of about 181,000 in Kamchatka, Russia. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the epicenter of the earthquake was about 55 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The epicenter was at a depth of 30 miles below the ground.
No major damage due to earthquake
There has been no major damage due to the earthquake. However, buildings are being inspected and it is being ascertained that if there is any damage anywhere, it can be repaired before a major accident occurs. During this time, special attention is being given to social facilities.
Tsunami warning
The Russian Emergency Ministry has not issued a tsunami warning due to the earthquake. However, the US tsunami warning system says that this earthquake can cause dangerous tsunami waves in the areas adjacent to the Russian sea. The warning says that there is a danger of tsunami up to 300 kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquake.
Furniture fell, utensils broke
The earthquake forced residents of the region to flee their homes. Furniture fell and dishes broke due to the quake, TASS reported. According to the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the quake struck at 7:21 am Kamchatka time (22:21 pm Moscow time) on Saturday.
