Berlin: Who is targeting the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) air base in West Germany? Who is the one who wants to target NATO’s air base? … NATO has currently increased the security of the air base in view of intelligence about a ‘potential threat’ and all non-essential employees for the mission have been sent home as a precautionary measure. NATO has given this information. Geilenkirchen Air Base, near the Netherlands border, is the place where NATO’s ‘Airborne Warning and Control System’ (AWACS) aircraft are located.
“We have increased the security level,” a post from the NATO AWACS fleet’s handle on social media platform X said on Thursday. The nature of the potential threat was not elaborated upon. It said “the operation continues as planned.” The Geilenkirchen base said on Friday that it had no further information to provide and that “there is currently no change in the situation.” German news agency dpa said a reporter saw police vehicles on the grounds of the air base.
Additional police deployment took place last night
Police confirmed the deployment Thursday night but gave no additional details. Last week, a major German air force base near Cologne was locked down for several hours amid suspicions that its water supply may have been tampered with. An investigation found no evidence of such tampering. Suspicious activity had been reported in Geilenkirchen and a man was briefly detained for questioning near the base, but no incriminating information was obtained, dpa reported at the time. (AP)
