Who will become the President of the Senate of Pakistan?

Pakistan News: Amidst political turmoil in Pakistan, the new government was finally sworn in. Shahbaz Sharif was sworn in as the new Prime Minister on Monday. Meanwhile, the name has almost been decided on who will become the Chairman of the Senate of Pakistan. It is almost certain that former Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani will become the Senate President. He has submitted his nomination papers for the election to be held on March 14 for this post. This information was received from a media news on Monday.

Geelani had won the elections

Geelani had won the election for National Assembly from Multan in Punjab province in the elections held on February 8. He has vacated his seat and will now contest for the Senate seat from Islamabad. Geelani, who took oath as a member of the lower house on February 29, had voted in favor of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shehbaz Sharif during the elections held in the National Assembly on Sunday to elect the prime minister.

Know who will give competition to Geelani for the post of Senate President

According to the news of ‘Dawn’ newspaper, 71-year-old Geelani is expected to become the next Speaker of the Upper House of Parliament as per the power-sharing agreement between Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and PML-N. Geelani, who served as the country’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2012, will face Chaudhry Ilyas Meharban of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.

Meherban will be the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) candidate, as PTI is not represented in the National Assembly. This is because Khan’s party cannot contest elections. A total of 19 candidates from different political parties are in the fray for five other Senate seats.
