Sadiq Khan has won the election for the post of Mayor of London for two consecutive times.
London: Two candidates of Indian origin have also joined those challenging outgoing Mayor Sadiq Khan for the post of Mayor of London, the capital of Britain. Now two businessmen of Indian origin have also entered the race as independent candidates for the mayor’s election to be held on May 2. 63-year-old businessman Tarun Gulati started his mayoral election campaign during his visit to India late last year, while 62-year-old Shyam Bhatia has also entered the fray.
‘The current incumbent has lost support’
About a dozen candidates are in the fray for the post of Mayor of London. Gulati’s election slogan is ‘trust and development’, while Batra has given the slogan ‘messenger of hope’. Gulati said, ‘There is a growing perception that the current incumbent has lost support and voters are also not very happy with another major contender from the party. ‘I am standing as an independent candidate to become the next Mayor of London because I want to encourage the free flow of ideas and policies without party ideology and bias.’

Gulati said, ‘I am taking people’s views and accordingly will work to involve people wherever possible in the decision-making process.’ When asked about his decision to launch his mayoral campaign in India, Gulati said, ‘India is my birthplace, where I was born and London is my workplace, where I work. It was very important for me to get the blessings of elders, parents, family and well-wishers. That’s why I decided to start my campaign for the post of Mayor of London in India. (Language)
