ShareWest Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee government on Tuesday reshuffled the health and police departments, a day after her meeting with agitating junior doctors. Senior Indian Police Service officer Manoj Kumar Verma has been appointed as the new Kolkata Police Commissioner, replacing Vineet Goel, a notification said. The removal of Goel, who was facing criticism over his handling of the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital, was announced by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after a meeting with protesting doctors on Monday night.
Goyal is a 1994 batch IPS officer. He has been made Additional Director General of Police (ADG) and Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal Police. One of the agitating junior doctors said that they have seen the government order and will announce their future strategy after holding their meeting. He said, “We will have a meeting and then we will decide whether to continue the work strike further.”

Manoj Kumar Verma, who has been appointed as the new Police Commissioner, is a 1998 batch IPS officer. Earlier, he was handling the responsibility of ADG and IG (Law and Order). The responsibility of ADG and IG (Law and Order) has now been handed over to 1995 batch IPS officer Javed Shamim. Manoj Kumar Verma told in an interview on Facebook that his family has a military background. His father was employed in the Indian Army. Because of this, he has studied in many Kendriya Vidyalayas but mainly in the military school located in Belgaum, Karnataka.
Verma later obtained a degree in mechanical engineering from an engineering college in Kota. After this, he started preparing for the civil services. He passed the 1998 Civil Services Examination and went to the Police Academy in Hyderabad to get training. Verma has also served as the Police Commissioner of Siliguri for some time, after which he was appointed Inspector General (IG) of Traffic in West Bengal in 2016. He has also held the post of Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Darjeeling in 2017 and ADG and Inspector General of Intelligence Bureau.
