Sad news is continuously coming from the South film industry. Another veteran actress has said goodbye to the cinema world. Veteran Malayalam actress Kaviyoor Ponnamma has passed away. The senior actress was battling cancer for a long time. She was 79 years old. Kaviyoor Ponnamma breathed her last in Kochi, Kerala. Apart from Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, Malayalam star and director Prithviraj Sukumaran shared a picture of the late artist on his Instagram and paid tribute to him by remembering his contribution to cinema. People associated with the entertainment world have been shocked by the death of Kaviyoor Ponnamma.
CM Pinarayi Vijayan condoles the death of Kaviyoor Ponnamma
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed deep grief over the demise of Kaviyoor Ponnamma. The Chief Minister said, ‘I express my deep sorrow over the demise of Kaviyoor Ponnamma, who won the hearts of the Malayalis through her roles as a mother. Her long artistic career was not limited to cinema but also extended to theatre and television.’ He said, ‘With her demise, a glorious chapter in the history of Malayalam cinema and theatre has come to an end. However, she will remain in the hearts of the Malayalis through her memorable characters. I offer my heartfelt condolences to her family and friends in this difficult time.’
South’s famous mother passed away
Kerala Culture Minister Saji Cherian also condoled the death of Kaviyoor Ponnamma. He remembered her as an actress who had made a special place in the hearts of Malayalis through her iconic mother roles. Cinema actor Prithviraj Sukumaran also shared a picture of the veteran actress on his Instagram story and condoled her death. Kaviyoor started her acting career with theater. Over the years, she has worked in 1000 films. She was known for playing the mother of actors like Mohanlal, Naseeruddin and Mammootty in many Malayalam films.
Ruled the cinema-television world for years
Kaviyoor Ponnamma won the Kerala State Award not once but four times during her long career. She appeared in films like ‘Thanivarthanam’, ‘Bharatham’ and ‘Sukrutham’. The actress was married to screenwriter Maniswamy and has a daughter Bindu. Her notable films include ‘Asuravithu’, ‘Velutha Katharina’, ‘Karakanakadal’, ‘Theerthayathra’, ‘Nirmalyam’, ‘Chenkol’, ‘Bharatham’, ‘Santhangopalam’, ‘Sukrutham’ and many more. She also lent her voice as a playback singer in eight films and appeared in over 25 television shows.
