AIIMS Delhi and IIT Delhi are working together on innovation, in which patients will be treated through music. AIIMS Delhi will now teach brain stroke patients to speak using the tune of Indian music. In a report of Times of India, Dr. Deepti Vibha of AIIMS has said that she will teach humming and speaking through music to the patients who have lost their ability to hear and speak after brain stroke. He said that for the first time in India, a music therapy module is being prepared for patients suffering from aphasia and the Neurology Department of AIIMS is taking the help of IIT Delhi in this.
What is Afizia?
After brain stroke, about 21 to 38 percent of patients suffer from aphasia. Actually, in aphasia, the left part of the patient’s brain stops working. It is only because of the left part of the brain that a person speaks, understands things and expresses his feelings in front of people. A patient suffering from aphasia is unable to speak even a small word and to get rid of this problem, the Neurology Department of AIIMS is working on music therapy for the patients. Music therapy is often used for such patients in foreign countries.
How is music therapy given?
Dr. Vibha says that in aphasia, the left part of the patient’s brain does not work at all but the right part remains completely healthy, due to which the patient is not only able to understand music but also hums its tune. Where due to aphasia the patient is not able to say even a single word “water”, he hums the entire song through music therapy.
Through music therapy, by activating the right side of the patient, he is taught to speak and understand the tune of music. In this, first of all, small musical tunes are played in front of the patient, which the patient is not only able to understand but is also able to hum them. These tunes are decided in advance. Which are explained to the patients first in pieces and then by speaking the entire line. It includes tunes like Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram or Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon, which almost every Indian knows and has heard.
How far has the process reached now?
At present, IIT Delhi and AIIMS Delhi are jointly doing research on patients and are busy preparing its module. Professor Deepti said that there is a doctor who is an expert in Carnatic music and knows the intricacies of music very well, hence some tunes are being searched with him which can be worked on later.
A study will be conducted on 60 patients suffering from brain stroke aphasia, in which the first 30 patients will be given music therapy and the remaining 30 patients will be given standard treatment. After this, every 3 months, the changes in them will be noted and the results will be presented.
