Smriti Irani’s answer on paid period leave at workplace, consider it not a problem but normal

Globally, questions are often raised that should women get paid leave i.e. period leave during periods? In some countries there are laws that women get leave during periods. These days, churches are in trouble in India regarding period leave. From social media to news channels, there is a debate on whether women should get leave during this period or not? What is the opinion of Modi government on this has not been revealed but Smriti Irani, Minister of Women and Child Development in Modi government has answered this question. Smriti Irani says that for us women, periods are not a problem or difficulty or any kind of obstacle. 

‘Paid Mensuration Leave’

Union Women and Child Development (WCD) Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader on Wednesday advocated against ‘Paid Mensuration Leave’. BJP minister commented that menstruation is not "Obstacle" is not and therefore "Paid Mensuration Leave Policy" Not required. On Wednesday, Smriti Irani was answering a question asked by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) member Manoj Kumar Jha in the Upper House on the ‘Period Paid Leave’ policy. The minister said, “As a menstruating woman, menstruation and the menstrual cycle are not a hindrance, it is a natural part of women’s lives. We should not propose such issues where women are denied equal opportunities. 

Period is not a problem but normal…what is the need for leave in this?

Smriti Irani replies that it is normal for women to have periods. Do not take it as an obstacle or problem. As far as problems are concerned, some women face problems more often and some less often. It can be easily cured with medicine or diet. It is part of lifestyle. At present, it is not necessary to implement paid period leave in all workplaces. The Center is already working in this direction and implementing a scheme to make girls aged 10-19 years aware about cleanliness during periods. Besides, efforts are also being made to involve more and more girls in it. 

Is there any policy regarding period leave in India? p>

For the first time in the year 1992, the provision of period leaves was given to government employees in Bihar. This was a unique thing in itself. Lalu Yadav’s government had approved this. During this, the facility of two days period paid leave was provided in the workplace. And even today women of Bihar get this leave. After Bihar, Kerala is the only state where period leaves are given to women. 

Is there a provision for period leaves in foreign countries also? 

There is a system of paid period leaves in foreign countries also. This is different from ‘health rights’. For your information, let us tell you that in some countries, period leaves of three to five days are available. In this, periods leaves of 3-5 days are available in countries like Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, South Korea and Zambia. Health rights are different in Spain and European countries. Smriti Irani says that period leaves should not be seen as a handicap.
