This year, UNAIDS, the United Nations agency advocating for comprehensive and coordinated global action on AIDS, has given the theme ‘Let communities lead’. Together we can end AIDS
UNAIDS said, ‘With the leadership of communities, the world can end AIDS. Organizations in communities living with, at risk of, or affected by HIV are the front lines of progress in the HIV response. Communities connect people to person-centred public health services, building trust. Monitor implementation of policies and services and hold providers accountable. It highlighted how lack of funding, policy and regulatory barriers, lack of capacity and a crackdown on civil society are hindering progress in HIV prevention and treatment services.
UNAIDS has also suggested a three-point solution to empowering communities that can lead the fight against AIDS. These include giving communities a leadership role, providing them with appropriate funding, and enabling a regulatory environment to facilitate the role of communities in the provision of HIV services. UNAIDS released its annual World AIDS Day report highlighting that it is still possible to reach “the end of AIDS” by 2030. If resources are given to communities and services at the grassroots level.
UNAIDS said in the report, “The message of this report is one of active hope. Although the world is not currently on track to eliminate AIDS as a public health threat, it may be on track. The United Nations first In 2015, a target was set to eliminate AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
