Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has withdrawn its decision to honour the principal who had banned hijab after protests from the radical Islamic party SDPI. Let us tell you that the Karnataka Education Department had selected Kundapura PU College Principal B.G. Ramakrishna for the ‘Best Principal’ award in Udupi district but now he is not being given this honour. BJP MLA from Udupi Yashpal Suvarna has strongly attacked the Siddaramaiah government on this issue and said that the Chief Minister should apologise for this insult to the teacher community.
‘His work record has been excellent’
Suvarna said, ‘This award was given by the government on the basis of the recommendation of a selection committee of the education department, considering his merit and contribution in the field of education. Ramakrishna is the real deserving of this, his work record has been excellent. When there was a controversy regarding the issue of hijab, being a principal, he just followed the rules. He did not do any politics, he banned hijab to follow the rule of uniform. This was not his personal conduct but he got the discipline of the institute followed.’
‘This is an insult to the people of the district’
Accusing the Siddaramaiah government of the state of bowing to the pressure of a particular community, the BJP MLA said, ‘After Ramakrishna was selected to be given the award, the government is now refusing. This government has bowed down to the pressure of a community. This is an insult to the people of the district, an insult to the teacher community. Once again, the Siddaramaiah government is trying to spoil the beehive. The CM should apologize for insulting the people of the district. He should be given the award on the basis of his merit, otherwise we will not sit quiet.’
What was the hijab ban controversy?
B.G. Ramakrishna, following the rules of PU college, did not allow the students wearing hijab to enter the class in February 2022. In the video that went viral at that time, the students are seen standing near the gate in hijab. After this decision of Ramakrishna, there was a huge uproar in the entire state regarding ‘hijab ban’. B.G. Ramakrishna said that he was informed by the Education Department on Wednesday that due to technical reasons, he will not be given this award at present. He said that he has been told that however his award has not been canceled.
