Amid rising tensions over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday issued a stern warning, saying that if Bengal burns, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Delhi will also burn. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reacted sharply to Mamata’s warning and intensified its demand for her resignation. The BJP said that such anti-national comments are not the voice of a person holding a constitutional post.
Union minister and Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar also wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday against Mamata Banerjee for advocating violence in Kolkata. The letter written by Majumdar said, “CM Mamata Banerjee while addressing the TMC student wing in Kolkata today shamelessly incited people and said I never sought revenge but now do what you want to do. This is an open endorsement of revenge politics from the highest post in the state.”
He said, “I respectfully request you to take cognizance of this serious matter and initiate appropriate action to handle the situation and maintain the rule of law and public order.”
Reacting to Mamata Banerjee’s warning, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Didi, how dare you threaten Assam? Don’t show us red eyes. Don’t even try to burn India with your politics of failure. It does not befit you to speak divisive language.”
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh was also upset with Mamata Banerjee’s remarks and demanded that she should publicly apologise to the Northeast and the rest of the country for her remarks. He said, “How dare Didi threaten the Northeast? I strongly condemn such irresponsible remarks. She should publicly apologise to the Northeast and the rest of the country. Mamata Didi should immediately stop inciting violence and hatred with divisive politics. It is extremely inappropriate for a leader to threaten violence on a public platform.”
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charam Majhi also joined Sarma and Biren Singh and questioned Mamata Banerjee, “Who gave you the right to make such objectionable comments about Odisha?” He said, “Odisha is a peaceful state. The people of Odisha are also responsible and aware. Our people of Odisha will never accept your hateful attitude, negative comments and insensitive attitude towards their state. The comments you are making are dangerous for the country. Please do not do this. Keep calm.”
BJP launched a four-pronged attack on Mamata, demanding her resignation
Union Minister and Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar has targeted Mamata Banerjee for her remarks and demanded her resignation from the post of Chief Minister. He said that her warning sounds like the voice of an anti-national. He said, “Today CM Mamata Banerjee is shamelessly making anti-national statements. This is not the voice of a person holding a constitutional post. This is the voice of an anti-national.”
