Leaders in support and opposition of Bharat Bandh
New Delhi: Various organizations across the country have come out on the streets today in support of Bharat Bandh against the Supreme Court’s decision on the creamy layer in SC-ST reservation. Many political parties have also supported this call for Bharat Bandh. At the same time, many political parties have also opposed it.
Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi clearly said that he will not support this Bharat Bandh. Some special people are running this movement for their own selfish interests. He alleged that some economically prosperous Dalits are spreading the illusion of ending reservation by saying false things. Many people of Dalit community are still living in extreme poverty. Manjhi said, ‘Those who are supporting the bandh today are the same people who strengthened their position in the name of reservation earlier and left the rest of the Dalit community behind.’ Manjhi said that some Dalits are living a better life by taking advantage of reservation.
NDA ally Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) president and Union minister Chirag Paswan has supported the Bharat Bandh. He said that we will fully support this bandh. Chirag Paswan said that as long as there is a practice of untouchability against SC and ST in the society, there should not be reservation in sub-categories and provisions like creamy layer for SC/ST.
Kirori Lal Meena said that only some people want to provoke SC-ST by inciting them for political gains. This is not fair. He said that the Supreme Court gave an observation that creamy layer should be considered. The Prime Minister called a cabinet meeting and said that we will not implement any kind of creamy layer. Kirori Lal Meena said that I am with the sentiment of the Supreme Court on creamy layer.
On the other hand, BSP supremo Mayawati has supported the Bharat Bandh. She has targeted political parties like BJP and Congress and has appealed to BSP workers to join the Bharat Bandh in a disciplined and peaceful manner. She has appealed to her workers to submit a memorandum to the government under the Bharat Bandh and demand the abolition of the changes made in reservation through constitutional amendment. She said, ‘The constitutional right to reservation given to the OBC community along with SC-ST is the result of the continuous struggle of Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, the true messiah of these classes. The BJP, Congress and other parties should not play with it by understanding its necessity and sensitivity.’
