Just ahead of the assembly elections, Sharad Pawar has filed an application in the Supreme Court, seeking direction to the junior Pawar faction to allot election symbols other than ‘clock’.
Before the assembly elections in Maharashtra, the political fight between the state’s largest political family has once again reached the Supreme Court. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) founder Sharad Pawar has approached the Supreme Court over the use of the party’s election symbol ‘clock’. NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) has filed a petition to stop Ajit Pawar faction from using the ‘clock’ symbol. The court will hear the case on October 15.
In its petition, the Sharad Pawar faction has said that the use of the clock election symbol by the Ajit Pawar faction during the Lok Sabha elections held earlier this year had created a lot of confusion among the voters. Therefore, the Sharad faction has appealed to the court to direct the Election Commission to allot a new election symbol to the NCP led by Ajit Pawar faction.
In July last year, Ajit Pawar rebelled against his uncle Sharad Pawar and broke the NCP and joined hands with the ruling alliance in Maharashtra. After this, the Election Commission had allotted the name and election symbol of NCP to the Ajit Pawar faction, but before the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, the Supreme Court had stopped the Ajit Pawar faction from using the clock symbol and ordered that They should make it clear among the people that this election symbol is under consideration in the court.
Let us tell you that before the split of NCP founded by Sharad Pawar, the election symbol was ‘Clock’. The Election Commission had allotted the NCP name and ‘clock’ symbol to the Ajit Pawar-led group in February this year. The apex court had on March 19 allowed the Sharad Pawar-led faction to use ‘Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar’ as its name and ‘man blowing trumpet’ as its election symbol ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
