There is such a shortage of water in this city of Kerala that schools and colleges had to be closed

People in Kerala are facing increasing problems due to shortage of drinking water. Due to delay in water supply in the city, holiday was declared in educational institutions in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday. Due to problems in the main transmission line in Melur, people are facing problems in homes and business houses in 40 wards here for the last four days. Supply of drinking water by Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has been disrupted for the last four days. According to information, the alignment of the water pipeline had to be changed due to the work going on on the Thiruvananthapuram-Nagarcoil railway line.

Even though the pumping of drinking water started on Monday morning, the district administration declared a holiday for all educational institutions including schools in the city. The examinations scheduled for Monday have also been postponed. By Monday afternoon, water started flowing in many areas of Kochi, although the higher reaches are still not getting water. Meanwhile, the Congress student wing Youth Congress and KSU staged a protest demanding action against the guilty officials.

According to officials, the repair work began on Thursday and was expected to be completed within 48 hours but a fault in the sluice valve delayed the work, leaving large parts of the capital without water. Tankers were run by the municipal corporation and KWA throughout the day on Sunday but the supply could not be completed. State Water Resources Minister Roshi Augustine said an inquiry would be conducted to find out who was responsible for the leak that led to delay in drinking water supply for over four days.
