Why were junior doctors hell-bent on getting the Kolkata Police Commissioner removed? Several other officers were also punished

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accepted most of the demands of the doctors protesting against the rape and murder of a female doctor in RG Kar Hospital. She has removed Kolkata Commissioner of Police IPS officer Vineet Goyal from his post with immediate effect. Apart from this, it has also been decided to transfer many top officials of the police and health department. The doctors had presented a five-point charter in front of the Chief Minister.

The Chief Minister has decided to remove the Director of Medical Education (DMR) and Director of Health Services (DHS) as well as the Deputy Commissioner North Division. They are accused of trying to bribe the victim’s parents. The Chief Minister said that the new commissioner will be announced after 4 pm on Tuesday. The Supreme Court is also scheduled to hear the case today. The protesting doctors had reached Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s official residence in Kalighat to meet her.

Who is former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal?

In December 2021, IPS Vineet Kumar Goyal was appointed as the Police Commissioner of Kolkata. He is a 1994 batch IPS officer. He has studied from IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur. During his career, he held many important positions. Vineet Goyal was the Deputy Commissioner of Eastern Suburban Division. Apart from this, he has also been the Joint Commissioner of Special Task Force and Traffic. Vineet Goyal has received the Gallantry Award for Police Service twice. Apart from this, he was also awarded the Chief Minister’s Medal and Police Medal.

What are the allegations against Commissioner Vineet Goyal?

Vineet Goyal is accused of negligence in this case. Doctors and opposition parties say that Vineet Goyal is loyal to Mamata Banerjee just like DGP Rajiv Kumar. Apart from this, the police could not handle the vandalism that took place in the hospital on August 14 after the incident. Mamata Banerjee said during the meeting that Vineet Goyal himself had offered to resign but she stopped him.

After the vandalism in the hospital on 14 August, questions were raised on the attitude of the police. At the same time, people were also upset by the statement of the Kolkata Police Commissioner. He had said that people are losing faith in the police due to rumours and media campaigns. He said that the police did not do anything wrong.
