ICC Player of the Month: The International Cricket Council on February 5 announced the players nominated for the ICC Men’s and Women’s Player of the Month awards for January 2024. English batsman Ollie Pope, who scored 196 runs against India in the first Test match, is included in the list of players nominated by the ICC. Pope’s inning of 196 runs in the second innings of Hyderabad Test proved to be a game changer while India had taken a huge lead of 190 runs in its first innings. The No. 3 English batsman played a memorable inning while the other batsmen had to struggle against India’s spin attack. Because of that innings, the England team had won that match very easily.
These two players will compete
The English batsman will face tough competition from fast bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Shamar Joseph for the ICC monthly award. Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood took 19 wickets in six Test innings in January and was the leading wicket-taker in the two-match Test series against the West Indies last month.
On the other hand, Shamar Joseph made headlines in January by making a strong start to his Test career. The right-arm fast bowler dismissed Steve Smith with his first ball in international cricket during the first Test match in Adelaide, which he later converted into a five-wicket haul in the match. However, Shamar’s even better performance came in the second match at Gabba where he won the game by taking seven wickets in the second innings and his team leveled the two-match series. Shamar received the Player of the Series award for his 13 wickets.
These players got a chance among women
Meanwhile, Australia’s in-form batsmen Beth Mooney and Alyssa Healy and young Irish wicketkeeper-batsman Amy Hunter have been nominated for the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for January 24. 18-year-old Amy Hunter scored 101* and 77* against Zimbabwe women’s team in the five-match T20I series last month and became the youngest female cricketer to score centuries in both ODIs and T20Is. The performance of second offs Beth Mooney and Alyssa Healy was also excellent.
