Indian Women Badminton Team
Indian women’s badminton team has won the title of Badminton Asia Team Championship by defeating Thailand. Indian players showed an amazing game. However, Thailand entered the tournament without its two top players, world number 13 Ratchanok Intanon and world number 16 Pornpawee Chochuwong, which gave India the advantage. India defeated Thailand 3–2 in the final. The Indian women’s badminton team was playing the final of this tournament for the first time and India won the title in the first attempt. The Indian women’s team, led by PV Sindhu, continued its good performance against all odds and defeated two-time bronze medalists Thailand.
PV Sindhu gave a strong start
Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu, who was out of the court for almost four months due to injury, presented an aggressive game and defeated world number 17 Supanida Katethong 21-12, 21-12 in the first singles. Gave India a 1-0 lead. World number 23 pair of Trisa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also continued their brilliant performance and defeated world number 10 pair of Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Ravinda Pra Jongjai 21-16, 18-21, 21-16 to give India the lead. These players lost
A lot of expectations were being placed on Ashmita Chaliha after her spectacular win against former world champion Nozomi Okuhara of Japan but she lost 11-21 14-21 to world number 18 Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the second singles. Young Shruti Mishra and Priya Konjengbam suffered a 11-21, 9-21 defeat against world number 13 pair of Benyappa Amsard and Nunatakarn Amsard, leveling the match at 2-2.
Anmol Kharb did wonders
Now the onus of making India win was on Anmol Kharb, who defeated world number 45 Pornpicha Choikiwong 21-14 21-9 and gave India the gold medal. Anmol said that this is a big achievement at the age of 17. Now I have to work harder. He also said that I am very happy that we won the gold medal because this is the first time that India is winning the gold medal in the Badminton Asia Team Championship.
