Sunil Gavaskar is known for expressing his opinions openly. BCCI has recently implemented an incentive scheme to promote Test cricket. Now great batsman Sunil Gavaskar has advised BCCI to increase the Ranji Trophy fees, so that players do not make excuses and participate in Ranji Trophy.
Sunil Gavaskar gave this statement
Sunil Gavaskar said that it is a good thing for BCCI to give awards to the players. But but I would also request BCCI to ensure that the feeder of the Test team, which is Ranji Trophy. That should also be taken care of. If Ranji Trophy fees can be doubled or tripled, then definitely a lot more people will play Ranji Trophy and a lot less people will opt out of Ranji Trophy, because if the fees for playing Ranji Trophy matches is a good fee then less people will opt out.
Slab system proposed
Sunil Gavaskar echoed Rahul Dravid’s sentiments regarding awards for red-ball cricket and proposed a slab system based on the number of first-class matches played. He said that I think what Rahul Dravid had said when it was announced in Dharamshala. He would like to call it a reward. They all want to play with the slab system.
It happens in a span of three days that there is probably one day in between for the journey. There is no time to go to the physio during travelling. So, perhaps there should be a slight gap so that the player can get enough time. My personal opinion is that Ranji Trophy should be held from October to mid-December and then white-ball tournaments should be introduced. This way everyone will be available to play except those who are playing for India. There would be no real excuse for withdrawing.
