The 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be played between defending champions Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 22 at the Chepauk Stadium. The last few seasons of IPL have seen many different rules being implemented, including the impact player rule, DRS facility for no and wide balls. Because of this the matches have appeared to be becoming even more exciting. So far, some rules have been seen in IPL, which have not been used in T20 International cricket. There is also a rule in this which will be applicable for the first time in the IPL 2024 season, which will benefit the bowlers the most.

1 – Use of 2 bouncer balls in one over

Till now in T20 International, the bowler can bowl the bouncer ball against the batsman only once in an over. Till the end of IPL, bowlers were allowed to bowl only one bouncer ball. However, now in the upcoming season, bowlers will be allowed to bowl 2 bouncer balls in an over. This rule was implemented by the BCCI in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, in which the performance of the bowlers was much better due to 2 bouncer balls and after this it has been decided to implement it in the IPL also.

2 – Impact Player Rule

Like the last season of IPL, this time too the Impact Player rule will be seen. In this, the captains of both the teams have to give the names of 5-5 substitute players after the toss. Among these selected players, the captain can choose any one player as an impact player according to the situation of the match. He is included as the 12th player of the team, who can come at any time in the match.

If a team is bowling and has got all the overs done by one of its bowlers, then in such a situation, after including another player through the impact player rule, it can get him to do the overs also. At the same time, the batting team can also send the impact player to bat on the field at any time. However, whichever player is included in place of this impact player, that player will not be able to take further part in the match.

3 – DRS facility for no and wide balls

In T20 cricket, fans have often seen the turn of the match changing due to the umpire’s decision. This also includes decisions of no and wide balls which never go to the liking of either the batting team or the bowling team. Keeping such a situation in mind, the review system for no and wide balls was also implemented in the IPL last season, which can be used by both the teams at any time, although only 2 reviews in an innings are used for this. Which can be done by the teams in T20 cricket.

4 – Timeout Rule

Strategic time out rule is also implemented in IPL, which is used twice during an innings, once by the batting team and second time by the bowling team. There are four time outs in the match which are given to the teams to make their strategy. The bowling team can use this timeout between 6 to 9 overs, while the batting team can take timeout from 13 to 16. A static timeout lasts for 2 minutes 30 seconds. Many times, matches have been seen changing after timeout in IPL matches.

5 – Smart Replay Technique

Another new technique will be used in the IPL 2024 season, so that the work of the third umpire can be made easier. With the introduction of Smart Smart Replay System, umpires will get a lot of convenience in taking decisions. For the review system, eight Hawk Eye high speed cameras will be installed on the field and two camera operators will also be near the third umpire. This will give the TV umpire direct input from these two operators. In this smart replay, the umpire will be able to see clear visuals from different angles.

6 – Stop Clock

ICC has recently fully implemented the stop clock rule in limited overs format. In this, if the bowling team does not start the next over within 60 seconds after finishing one over, then after two warnings, a penalty of 5 runs will be imposed on them for every mistake. However, this rule has not been implemented in IPL yet.
