AUS vs NZ: A two-match Test series is being played between Australia and New Zealand. Before the start of this series, New Zealand’s star player Neil Wagner had announced his retirement. Meanwhile, another star will retire after the first match of this series. This star is none other than South African experienced umpire Marais Erasmus. Marais Erasmus is umpiring in his last international match. This match is being played at Basin Reserve in Wellington, New Zealand. Where the New Zealand team won the toss and decided to bowl.

Erasmus is part of ICC’s elite panel

Erasmus is one of the finest umpires who is part of the ICC’s elite panel and his retirement decision will have a huge impact on the ICC and international cricket. Adrian Holdstock will be the only South African umpire on the ICC’s elite panel following the retirement of Erasmus Illustrious. In a freewheeling conversation with Cricbuzz, Erasmus revealed that he had decided to step down in October last year and informed the ICC about his decision.

what did erasmus say

“I took the decision in October last year and I informed the ICC that I will terminate my contract in April and that will be it,” said Erasmus. Let us tell you that he has won the David Shepherd Trophy, the best award for umpires in cricket, thrice. This award is given by ICC. Erasmus believes that umpiring is a challenging job. The challenge of the work, he said, is trying to get it right in that moment. It’s always something special and difficult, and it’s exciting when you play a good game.

Erasmus has won the ICC Umpire of the Year honor on three occasions (2016, 2017 and 2021) and is second only to Australia’s Simon Taufel, who has won the title five times. Erasmus has officiated in 80 red-ball games, 124 ODIs and 43 T20Is as an on-field umpire. It is noteworthy that Erasmus has not yet completed his umpiring work and after his retirement, he can be seen umpiring in the South African domestic circuit.
