Kiev: A joint statement has been issued by both the countries amid the long talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Zelensky. It said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Ukraine on 23 August 2024 at the invitation of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. Prime Minister Modi and President Zelensky reiterated their readiness for further cooperation in maintaining the principles of international law such as respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states under the UN Charter. They also agreed on the desirability of close bilateral dialogue in this regard. At the same time, PM Modi said during this time that India has never been neutral, but we have always been in favor of peace.

India is ready to play a role in every field to try to maintain peace

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “People of other countries also know that India has actively planned peace efforts and you also know that our approach has been people-centric. I want to assure you and the whole world that this is India’s commitment and we believe that respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity is of utmost importance to us. We support this. Some time ago, when I met President Putin in support of this, I told him that this is not the time for war. I went to Russia for a meeting, there also I said in clear words that no problem is ever solved on the battlefield. The solution comes only through dialogue, dialogue and diplomacy and we should move forward in that direction without wasting time.

Proposal for both the parties to sit together

PM Modi proposed both the countries to come to a table for talks. He said that both the sides should sit together and find ways out of this crisis. The Prime Minister told Zelensky – Today I want to specifically discuss with you the path of peace and progress, I want to assure you that India is ready to play an active role in every field for the effort of peace. If I can personally contribute to this, then I would like to do so. For this, I can assure you as a friend.

India has never been neutral, we have always been in favour of peace

PM Modi said in Kiev, “…India was never neutral, we have always been in favor of peace.” When it was the initial days of the war, you helped in evacuating Indian citizens and students. I express my gratitude to you for your help in such a time of crisis. He said that the world knows very well that during the war we played two roles. The first role was of humanitarian approach. I assure you that whatever is required from the humanitarian point of view, India will always stand with you and will be two steps ahead.

Both leaders advocated lasting peace through dialogue

I thank you (President Zelensky) for the warm welcome extended to me and my delegation… Today is a great day. It is a historic day for India-Ukraine relations. This is the first time that an Indian PM has visited Ukraine, which is a historic event in itself. Tomorrow is your National Day and we congratulate you for it… We pray for peace.
