United Nations: On one hand, while the possibility of war between Israel and Lebanon is increasing, on the other hand, the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday strongly supported a non-binding Palestinian resolution. This resolution demands that Israel end its ‘illegal presence’ in Gaza and the occupied West Bank within a year. Meanwhile, it should also be noted here that India did not participate in the voting on this resolution in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Wednesday.
These countries did not participate in the voting
The resolution passed on Wednesday demanded that “Israel remove its unlawful presence in the occupied Palestinian territory without further delay and within 12 months from the adoption of the present resolution.” In the 193-member General Assembly, 124 countries voted in favour of the resolution while 14 voted against it. 43 countries, including India, abstained from voting. Those who abstained include Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Nepal, Ukraine and Britain. Israel and the US were among the countries that voted against the resolution.
There is a threat to peace and security
The resolution prepared by Palestine also strongly condemned the Israeli government’s disregard for its obligations under the UN Charter, international law and relevant UN resolutions. It stressed that such violations pose a serious threat to regional and international peace and security. It said that Israel should be held accountable for any violations of international law in the occupied Palestinian territory.
