Woman gives birth to twin girls

An Alabama woman suffering from a rare congenital anomaly gave birth to healthy twin girls earlier this week. Two uteruses were found inside a woman named Kelsey Hatcher and when she gave birth to two girls, even the doctors were surprised to see them. When a woman named Kelsey Hatcher gave birth to a baby girl, her husband Caleb welcomed them at the Hospital of Birmingham (UAB) on Wednesday morning. Kelsey Hatcher, mother of twin girls, is now a mother of five, she announced on social media. “Our miracle babies were born! They told us baby girls are such a rarity to them that they should go ahead and celebrate their birthdays too,” Hatcher wrote on Instagram.

Hatcher’s body has two uteruses

Hatcher has a rare pair of uteruses and was pregnant with two children in both uteruses, which is said to be one of the rarest pregnancies. Doctors are calling it a decavatory pregnancy, the probability of which is one in a million. “I had already talked about care during Kelsey’s third pregnancy and knew she had a double uterus, but she was only going to have one child — two,” Hatcher’s obstetrician Shweta Patel explained in a hospital news release. “Two babies in utero was a real medical wonder.”

Baby girls were born in a wonderful way

Hatcher’s pregnancy was deemed high risk and she was scheduled to deliver at 39 weeks. In total, after 20 hours of labor, both the girls in both the uteruses were born. Although a typical twin pregnancy is defined by two babies in one uterus, “It’s safe to call the girls brother and sister,” said Richard Davis, the physician who co-managed the pregnancy.

The first child was born via normal delivery, as were Hatcher’s three previous children, while the second child was born via C-section. The medical team came fully prepared for the delivery. Hatcher wrote on social media, “I can’t wait to share the full story of the birth of both of my girls with you! While we are all at home right now. We wish you a speedy recovery and enjoy the holidays.” We’ll make time for it!”
