Palestinian civilians waiting for humanitarian aid in Gaza.
United Nations: There is currently a food shortage in Gaza. The situation is such that at least a quarter of Gaza’s population i.e. 5,76,000 people are on the verge of starvation. At the same time, other population of Gaza is also facing serious need of food items. As a result, people suffering from hunger are not only opening fire on trucks carrying relief material, but are also looting those trucks. In such a situation, it is becoming difficult to deliver relief material to the needy. People are targeting trucks on the way to loot relief material.
A top official of the United Nations (UN) gave this information on Tuesday. Describing the situation in Gaza, officials of the UN Humanitarian Office and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization said that the entire population of 2.3 million war-torn Gaza is at serious risk of food insecurity or worse. Not only this, the situation is worse in Northern Gaza, where people are facing severe shortage of food items and other humanitarian supplies.
Situation in Gaza worsened due to hunger
Describing the current situation in Gaza, UN Humanitarian Coordinator Ramesh Ramasingham told the UN Security Council that there is every possibility of the situation getting worse. He said a quarter of Gaza’s population is on the brink of starvation and one in six children under the age of two in northern Gaza is suffering from malnutrition. Carl Skau, deputy executive director of the World Food Programme, said the levels of child malnutrition in Gaza are the most severe ever seen anywhere in the world. He warned that if the situation did not change, famine would spread in northern Gaza. (AP)
