Today, 11th December, is the 101st birth anniversary of superstar Dilip Kumar. The actor gave many hit films in his long career. He always preferred those films which could do justice to his acting skills, but it is not always the case that you get what you want and the same was the case with Dilip Sahab. He did not always get the work he wanted and liked, and when this happened, his condition became miserable. Regarding this, he had revealed in an old interview that he feels disappointed when he does not get the desired roles.

Because of this there was disappointment

Speaking with the South Asia Monitor in 1995, when Dileep was asked if there was anything left for him to achieve in terms of ‘cinematic achievement’, he replied, ‘I wouldn’t put it exactly that way but from a literary point of view. I was sometimes frustrated having to wait for weeks and months for a better offer. These days, people come to me with ready-made audio cassettes, instead of a good script, and expect me to copy it.

Wanted to do better work in this direction

In this episode, Dilip Kumar was asked whether there is anything else left to ‘achieve’? In response to this he said, ‘No, I have not even started yet. There was a lot to do, but we have to work within a framework. To perform better you need better film, theme and characters. We have developed everything, but surprisingly for such a big country we do not have good modern literature. We have ignored and neglected our culture. Cinema reflects all this. I wish I could get something…a better character…to draw better equations. If you discard the earlier pictures based on the classics it becomes clear that the intention on Dilip Kumar’s part too was to make the best of the task at hand. An attempt has been made to improve whatever we had.
