World Antibiotic Awareness Week

Antibiotic Awareness Week is going on all over the world including America. This year this week is being celebrated on the theme ‘Preventing Antimicrobial Resistance Together’. The purpose behind celebrating this week is to deal with the challenge of antibiotic resistance. The main objective is to increase and spread understanding of antibiotics.

What are antibiotics?

Antibiotics are given to treat diseases caused by bacteria. Antibiotics cannot treat viral infections like cold, flu and cough. Their job is to grow and destroy bacteria. Sometimes the dangerous bacteria become very high. Then the immune system is not able to clean them properly. In such situations, antibiotics become useful.

How do antibiotics work?

Antibiotics: Antibacterial antibiotics like penicillin work to kill bacteria. These medicines usually work by interfering with the formation of the bacterial cell wall or cell material. Bacteriostatic stops bacteria from growing. It may take some time for people to feel better or their symptoms improve after taking the first dose.

How to take antibiotics

Most people take antibiotic tablets. Some doctors can also give them by injection or apply them directly on the infected area. Most antibiotics start working within a few hours. Many times doctors advise people to take the full course of medicines so that the bacteria do not reproduce again.

Do not take antibiotics by yourself, it can become dangerous
According to WHO, taking antibiotics on one’s own advice causes harm to the body. Antibiotic resistance can lead to infection, due to which the patient then has to remain hospitalized for a long time and get treatment. If the condition becomes more serious, the patient may even die. Antibiotic resistance infection can happen to any person of any age.
