Manipur Police has arrested 2 people on charges of murder.
Imphal: In Manipur, which has been continuously burning in the fire of violence for the last few months, two people have been arrested for the murder of an officer. According to the information given by the police on Tuesday, two people allegedly involved in the murder of an SDPO in Moreh in Tengnoupal district of the state have been arrested and arms and ammunition have been recovered from them. A special commando team caught the two from the border town on Monday evening, police said in a statement.
‘Both the accused had fired at the vehicles of the security forces’
Police said, ‘While patrolling near Moreh College, security personnel spotted two suspects who opened fire on the vehicles of the security personnel and fled towards a densely populated area. Security forces immediately retaliated and surrounded the area near Moreh College. The statement said that both the accused were eventually caught. It was told that he has been arrested after arms and ammunition were found in his possession. After the arrest of both, some women demonstrated in front of Moreh police station demanding their release.
‘Both the accused are among the suspects in the murder of SDPO Chingtham Anand’
According to the statement, both the arrested persons are ‘prime suspects’ in the murder case of Moreh SDPO Chingtham Anand that took place in October last year. Anand was shot dead when a police team led by him was inspecting the newly constructed helipad at ‘Eastern Ground’ in the border town dominated by the Kuki-Jo community. More than 180 people lost their lives in inter-caste clashes in Manipur on May 3 after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
