Last Wednesday, a lot of disturbance was created in Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, by supporters of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (Narayana Gowda faction). Activists of the organization vandalized shops and business establishments where signboards, advertisements and name plates were not in Kannada language. Seeing the matter gaining momentum, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a high-level meeting on Thursday and issued a major order.

60% Kannada language compulsory

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah held a high-level meeting regarding installation of Kannada nameplates in front of shops and offices in which BBMP and Culture Department officials were also present. Giving information after the meeting, Siddaramaiah said- “I have asked the Kannada and Culture Department officials to bring an ordinance and implement 60% Kannada nameplates and 40% other language nameplates. It will be notified and rules will be made.

Change name plate by this date

CM Siddaramaiah said that people do not need to panic. He has requested companies, organizations and other shops to change their nameplates before February 28, 2024. At the same time, State Home Minister G Parameshwara said that there is already an Act to protect Kannada language and culture. He pointed out that there is a need for an amendment in Section 17, sub-section 6 of the Act, in which the percentage of language is to be decided.

No disturbance allowed

On the other hand, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said on the whole issue that we are not against pro-Kannada activists, but they should not take the law into their hands. The incident of damage to properties in Bengaluru cannot be accepted. He said that we have to save the Kannada language and we respect those who are raising their voice for it, but it should not mean that the government will turn a blind eye to barbarity.
