Appointment will be made soon on 2 vacant posts in Election Commission

The search committee headed by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal held a meeting on Wednesday evening to prepare a list of five candidates to fill two vacancies of election commissioners in the Election Commission. Sources gave this information. A selection committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet on Thursday afternoon to finalize the two names. On the basis of the recommendation of the selection committee, President Draupadi Murmu will appoint two members of the Election Commission. These will be the first appointments to be made under the new law once the appointments are notified.

What does the law say?

The law also gives the three-member selection committee the power to appoint a person who has not been ‘shortlisted’ by the search committee. The vacancies were created by the retirement of Anoop Chandra Pandey on February 14 and the sudden resignation of Arun Goyal on March 8. Goyal’s resignation was notified on March 9. Due to vacancies, there is currently only Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar in the Election Commission. Before the recent enactment of the new law on appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners, the Election Commissioners were appointed by the President on the recommendation of the Government and as per tradition, the most senior was appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner.

There was a dispute between Arun Goyal and Rajiv Kumar

Let us tell you that Arun Goyal was in the race to become the Chief Election Commissioner. Because the current CEC Rajeev Kumar was going to retire in February 2025. Goyal took over as Election Commissioner on 21 November 2022. His tenure was till December 5, 2027. If Election Commission sources are to be believed, there are differences between Goyal and Rajiv Kumar regarding the file. After resigning, Goyal had cited personal reasons. He said the Center had also tried to stop him from leaving the post. According to a report published in The Hindu, serious differences had arisen between Rajiv Kumar and Goyal. For this reason, Rajiv Kumar attended the press conference held in Kolkata alone.
