Miscreants looted Rs 18.85 crore from a bank in Ukhrul, Manipur.

Imphal: A major incident of robbery took place in a branch of Punjab National Bank (PNB) on Thursday in Ukhrul town of Manipur. According to the information given by the officials, unknown armed dacoits robbed the PNB branch located in Ukhrul and looted Rs 18.85 crore. Police quoted eyewitnesses as saying that 8 to 10 armed men attacked the PNB Bank branch located in Viewland-1 of Ukhrul city in the afternoon. He said that when the miscreants attacked the bank, the employees were counting the money after the whole day’s transactions.

‘Bank employees tied with rope’

According to the police, armed criminals approached the employees counting the money and looted Rs 18.85 crore. Unidentified masked men reportedly had sophisticated weapons and overpowered the security personnel and PNB branch staff. “The security personnel and bank employees were tied with ropes at gunpoint and locked inside the store room by the armed men who fled with the cash,” a police officer said. Security forces led by senior police officers immediately reached the spot and the bank authority has registered a case with the police in this regard.

Bank was looted in Churachandpur in July

According to reports, as soon as it was known about such a huge robbery in the bank, there was a stir in the area. After this audacious incident, security forces have launched a massive search operation to catch the robbers. Let us tell you that for the first time after the caste violence that broke out in Manipur 7 months ago, such a big incident of robbery has taken place in Ukhrul town. Earlier in July, an armed gang had looted Rs 1 crore from an Axis Bank branch in Churachandpur.
