Supreme Court gave a blow to Bengal government.
A major hearing was held in the Supreme Court today regarding expelled Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Shaikh, accused of alleged atrocities on women in Sandeshkhali and attack on the ED team. In this hearing, the Supreme Court has given a big blow to the Mamata Banerjee government of Bengal. The Supreme Court has refused to hear the case immediately.
What was the order of the High Court?
In the case of attack on ED officers, Calcutta High Court had dismissed the SIT and ordered to hand over the investigation of the case to CBI. The High Court had ordered the Bengal government to hand over Sheikh Shahjahan to the CBI by 4.30 pm on Tuesday. However, the West Bengal government moved the Supreme Court against the High Court order. In the petition, the West Bengal government has argued that the time given by the High Court till 4.30 pm violates our rights. The government said that transferring the case to CBI is wrong, it is a violation of the old orders of the Supreme Court.
What did the Supreme Court say?
The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected the West Bengal government’s demand for an urgent hearing in the Sheikh Shahjahan case. The court has said that it will give a date in this matter. CJI will decide when the hearing will take place in this case. The matter was listed before the bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna for urgent hearing. Justice Khanna asked him to mention this before the CJI bench. Justice Khanna refused to hear it immediately and said that the CJI would decide the date.
Who is Sheikh Shahjahan?
Sheikh Shahjahan is the main accused in the case of sexual assault on women and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali and an expelled leader of Mamata Banerjee’s party Trinamool Congress. On January 5, a mob of around a thousand people had attacked ED officials in Sandeshkhali when they had gone to raid Sheikh’s premises in connection with the investigation into the alleged ration distribution scam in the state.
