Uttarkashi Tunnel Rescue: The ongoing rescue operation in Silkyara Tunnel of Uttarkashi has been successful. The workers trapped in the tunnel have been taken out. It is noteworthy that 41 laborers were trapped in this tunnel, rescue operation was being carried out for the last 16 days to bring them out. Today is the 17th day of the rescue operation and the workers have been taken out of the tunnel. The whole country was keeping an eye on this rescue operation and PM Modi himself was taking updates from moment to moment.
Workers were trapped in the tunnel since November 12
Silkyara Tunnel is located at a distance of about 30 kilometers from Uttarkashi district headquarters. On November 12, a part of this tunnel had collapsed, due to which the workers were trapped inside the tunnel.
Big machines failed, rat miners showed wonders
During this rescue operation, many big machines were seen failing but the rat miners showed great performance. This rescue operation was carried out with the help of auger machine, vertical drilling, rat miners. During this time, pipes were dug and laid.
During the rescue, there came a time when the American auger machine also got stuck and then the rat miner teams started manual drilling from there. These people did further digging by hand, for which they had hammer, crowbar and many digging tools.
What is rat mining?
This is a method of mining which is used to extract coal from narrow areas. The term ‘rat-hole’ refers to narrow holes dug in the ground. This pit is usually just for one person to descend and extract coal.
Once the pit is dug, miners use ropes or bamboo ladders to reach the coal seams. The coal is then extracted manually using primitive tools such as picks, shovels and baskets.
