BJP MP Ananth Kumar Hegde on Sunday said the BJP will amend the Constitution to remove the word ‘secular’ from the Preamble. He called upon the people to give two-thirds majority to BJP in the Lok Sabha, so that the Constitution of the country can be amended. Let us tell you that Hegde had given a similar statement 6 years ago also. Hegde said the BJP would need a two-thirds majority in both Houses of Parliament to amend the Constitution and “remove unnecessary things added to it by the Congress”.

“If the Constitution is to be amended…”

Addressing a gathering in Karwar, Hegde said that for this the BJP will have to come to power in more than 20 states. Hegde, a six-time Lok Sabha member from Karnataka, said, “If the Constitution has to be amended, the Congress has fundamentally amended the Constitution by forcing unnecessary things into it, especially by bringing in laws that were aimed at suppressing Hindu society.” It has been distorted – if all this has to be changed, it is not possible with this (present) majority.” He said, ”If we think it can be done, because there is no Congress in the Lok Sabha and ( Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi has two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha, and it is not possible if he remains silent.

“So the constitutional amendment will not be passed in the Rajya Sabha.”

Hegde said that to change the Constitution, it is necessary to win two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha as well as two-thirds of the states. Hegde said, “Modi has said that this time, 400 will be crossed.” Why cross 400? We have two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha, but we do not have two-thirds majority in the Rajya Sabha. We have a slim majority. We do not have sufficient majority in the state governments.” He said that NDA getting 400 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections will help it in getting a similar majority in the Rajya Sabha also. Pointing to Congress’ victory on three seats and BJP’s victory on one in the recently concluded Rajya Sabha elections in Karnataka, Hegde said that if Congress’ numbers increase, then any constitutional amendment made by the BJP government will not be able to be passed in the Rajya Sabha. . Giving the example of the Citizenship Amendment Act, he said it was passed in the Lok Sabha, but was later passed in the Rajya Sabha ‘with great efforts’. But many state governments did not approve it and it could not be implemented, Hegde said.

BJP MP Hegde explained the game of majority

The BJP MP said, “Now the government plans to implement the CAA through an amendment. If not, law and order will go out of control and anti-nationals will get a free hand.” Hegde did not explicitly take any name in the context of ‘anti-nationals’. He said, “If we win more than 400 Lok Sabha seats, we can also win Assembly seats. This will bring more than 20 states to us and we will also have a two-third majority in the state governments. Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and state Once there is a two-thirds majority in the governments, then let’s see how it will be. Let us tell you that in the year 2017, the then Minister of State for Skill Development Hegde had created a controversy by talking about changes in the Constitution.

BJP distanced itself from Hegde’s statement

At the same time, BJP has distanced itself from this statement of Anant Kumar Hegde. Karnataka BJP wrote on social media, MP Ananth Kumar Hegde’s comments on the Constitution are his personal views and do not reflect the party’s stand. BJP reaffirms our unwavering commitment to uphold the Constitution of the country and will seek clarification from Hegde regarding his comments.
