The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday alleged that members of the Christian community in Kerala who recently joined the party are being targeted online by supporters of the Congress and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M). BJP has been trying to woo the Christian community in the state of Kerala for some time. The BJP has warned of strict retaliatory action against those involved in targeting Christians. This development has happened at a time when a day before, a priest and about 50 families from the Christian community in the state joined the BJP.

BJP’s claim

A BJP spokesperson claimed that members of the Christian community are being “targeted online” after joining the party. Party state president K. Surendran told reporters, “We will protect them at any cost.” We will fight with full force against those who take any step against them. A strong response will be given.” The BJP leader alleged that Congress and CPI(M) are unable to tolerate the minority community joining the party. Surendran said members of the minority community, including priests, who joined the BJP have been threatened. He said that persons attempting to insult and personally target him through various mediums will have to face serious consequences. Around 50 Christian families, including Father Shaiju Kurien, secretary of the Orthodox church Nilakkal Bhadrasanam in southern Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district, joined the BJP on Saturday in the presence of Union Minister V Muraleedharan, the BJP said in a post on Facebook.

People will join BJP

Several people from the Kerala Congress (Jacob) faction also joined the party in the presence of state president K. Surendran in central Kerala’s Thrissur district on Saturday, the party said. The BJP attributed the influx of minorities into its ranks to the visionary vision of development led by the Narendra Modi-led government. “Over the last decade, the Modi government has shown a strong commitment to development,” it said. This is the main reason for motivating the minorities to support the BJP and join the party.” This development has come at a time when the BJP has restarted its ‘Sneh Yatra’ with the aim of connecting the Christian community in the state. Has given. The BJP said, “BJP can remove misunderstandings among minority groups through programs like Sneh Yatra. It is certain that more people will join BJP in the coming days to be a part of the politics of development.”

Congress’s allegation

Reacting to the developments, the Congress alleged that “Sangh Parivar is a movement that targets Christians across India.” Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, V.D. Satheesan, alleged that the BJP in Kerala was “like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, infiltrating Christian homes.” He told reporters in Kochi that Christians in Kerala have the wisdom to recognize his true intentions. Satheesan said that Congress is adopting a secular stance and the same stance is followed in Karnataka also. Last week, while resuming the Sneh Yatra, the BJP state president had met the top priests of various churches in the state and wished them a Merry Christmas on behalf of the Prime Minister. Recently, many senior bishops of various churches have given statements in support of the BJP on several occasions, but differences have also arisen among them over the alleged silence of the Central Government on the issue of Manipur violence. The Congress party in the state took a dig at the BJP’s initiative to reach out to the Christian community, saying it was not a ‘sneh yatra’ but a ‘betrayal of Jesus’.
